Description

An original 19th-century (circa 1850–1899) oil on canvas depicting a riverside scene with turreted house, wooden footbridge, and tree-lined embankment. The composition reflects the naturalistic landscape tradition that emerged in France in the mid-1800s, associated with the Barbizon School — a movement known for its focus on real countryside settings, atmospheric light, and tonal depth rather than idealized or dramatic scenes.

The palette is muted and earthy, with layered greens, ochres, and softened sky tones. Brushwork is controlled and detailed in the foliage and masonry, while the water and distant landscape transition into gradual tonal shifts typical of provincial academic studies of the period.

The canvas was not originally stretched and shows age-related wear consistent with the 19th century, including irregular edges, minor losses, surface staining, and fold lines from historical handling and storage.

Framed in a black painted wooden frame from Holland.
