Description

An original early 19th-century French steel engraving depicting a hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), published as Plate 9C from an expanded edition of Buffon's celebrated Histoire naturelle, revised and augmented by Frédéric Cuvier during a pivotal period in the development of modern zoology. Produced in France circa 1829–1835, these editions incorporated newly documented species and reflected the evolving scientific classification of the natural world.
