Antique 1919 Village Church Landscape Oil Painting
Description
A beautifully composed vertical landscape painted in oil on thick artist board and signed and dated 1919 at the lower left. The scene looks across a sunlit meadow toward a village church tower rising above red rooftops, framed by a large tree and soft late afternoon light.
The tall narrow format is especially striking and more unusual to find, giving the painting a strong architectural quality while still retaining the softness and atmosphere of the landscape. The brushwork is lively and painterly, with beautiful contrast between the cool shadows, warm grass, and pale sky.
Though sourced in France, the reverse bears an old New York tax stamp reading “Factory No. 253, 3rd Dist. N.Y.,” suggesting the board may have originally been imported or sold through New York.
Painted on thick board rather than thin canvas board, giving it a more substantial feel.
Very good condition overall with only the slightest paint loss along the outer edges consistent with age.
Sourced from France.
Measurements: 5 1/8" W x 9 1/8" H.
