Description

A charming and finely executed 19th century portrait painted in oil on thick wood panel, likely dating to the 1830s or 1840s.

The portrait depicts a young woman shown half-length against deep, moody brown grounds. She wears a dark dress with a broad white collar fastened by a small brooch at the throat, a narrow belt at the waist, gold earrings, and softly curled tendrils framing her face, with the rest of her hair tucked beneath a bonnet.

Both figures have especially soft, thoughtful expressions that give the pair a quiet, romantic feeling. The woman’s rosy cheeks and direct blue-eyed gaze feel gentle against the dark background, while the gentleman’s slightly wistful expression and turned pose lend the pair a more intimate, less formal quality than many portraits of the period.

Their clothing places the portraits in the late 1830s to early 1840s, during the transition from the Romantic era into the early Victorian period. Together, their appearance suggests a comfortably middle- or upper-middle-class couple: prosperous, well dressed, and conscious of contemporary fashion.

What makes these portraits especially striking is the quality of the painting. Though small in scale, they are beautifully and romantically rendered, with softly detailed faces, subtle tonal shifts, and a tenderness in their expressions.

Each has a wonderful presence and would be especially lovely leaned on a shelf, incorporated into a gallery wall, or framed and hung together.

Condition notes: Both are painted on substantial, thick wood panels and retain their original unframed edges. There is visible age and wear throughout consistent with their age. The woman has scattered paint loss across the background, dress, and face, including several small losses over her forehead and cheek. The gentleman has wear and losses concentrated along the perimeter of the panel, including a larger area of loss at the lower right corner. Both panels also show surface wear, abrasions, and minor marks from age.
