Vintage European Lake Landscape Oil Painting

This vintage oil painting depicts a quiet lakeside scene with a tree in the foreground, rocky red cliffs at left, and a small sailboat on the water in the distance. The soft palette of pale blue, green, terracotta, and dusty rose suggests the light and landscape around Montreux, Switzerland.

Signed what appears to be “Bernher” and dated ’37 at the lower left. The reverse is inscribed “A.V. Mottier / Vue encadrement Montreux (Bernher).” “Vue … Montreux” translates roughly to “view of Montreux,” suggesting the scene depicts the area around Montreux, Switzerland. The inscription may indicate that A.V. Mottier was the owner, framer, or possibly the artist.

Painted on thick artist board and likely executed in 1937. Newly presented in a vintage gold-painted wood frame.
