Description

A unique antique French earthenware vessel featuring a hand-painted inscription for "Au Cygne d'Or, Aix-en-Provence" ("The Golden Swan, Aix-en-Provence"). The rounded form is crafted from terracotta and retains traces of cream slip and brown glaze along the rim, along with a beautifully aged surface.

Au Cygne d'Or was likely the name of a local merchant, inn, or shop, reflecting the longstanding French tradition of businesses operating under named signs rather than street addresses. The hand-painted inscription suggests the vessel was made for or used by a specific establishment, giving it a direct connection to Aix-en-Provence.

The vessel comes with a cork stopper bearing labels that translate to "Harvested by Roland Compan, Salt Worker in Aigues-Mortes" and "Fleur de Sel" ("flower of salt"), a premium sea salt traditionally harvested by hand from the surface of salt ponds. Aigues-Mortes, located in southern France's Camargue region, is known for its centuries-old salt marshes and salt-harvesting traditions. The stopper is likely a later addition and is not believed to be original to the vessel.

Approx. 7 1/4" tall x 6" wide

Condition: Surface wear consistent with age and use, including a chip to the rim.
