Description

A beautifully executed antique French miniature watercolor depicting a stone architectural ruin tucked within a wooded landscape. Despite its incredibly small scale, the painting is rendered with remarkable precision and atmospheric depth, with delicate tonal layering throughout the trees, stonework, and shadowed passageway.

The composition has a quiet, romantic quality characteristic of late 19th- or early 20th-century French landscape studies. The handling of the foliage and masonry is especially refined, showcasing an impressive level of detail in miniature format.

Presented in what appears to be its original deeply beveled mat and gilt frame, with a Lyon framing label retained on the reverse for Gianora, Miroitier-Encadreur, 230 Rue Garibaldi, Lyon.

Signed at lower left, possibly reading “Bouelard,” with what appears to be a handwritten location inscription at lower right referencing a fountain or stone fountain structure, though the wording is partially difficult to decipher.

Wear to frame and mat consistent with age, including scattered markings and light discoloration to the mat. Frame currently has no hanger attached.

Watercolor on paper under glass.

Framed measures approximately 4 1/4" W x 6 1/8" H.
