Description

Signed oil on panel by French artist Charles Joseph Beauverie, likely painted circa 1890–1910. The composition depicts a quiet shoreline beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky, rendered in Beauverie’s signature muted palette of soft grays, warm taupes, blush, and lavender tones. The low horizon line and expansive sky give the work a calm, atmospheric quality, while the subtle tonal shifts across the water and distant land create a sense of depth and movement.

The painting is executed on board with a softly blended, almost misty surface that is especially characteristic of Beauverie’s later landscape studies. The work is signed “C. Beauverie” in the lower right corner.

The painting is presented in an ornate antique giltwood frame with richly cast scrolling detail, a cream-colored linen mat, and matching linen-lined inner detailing around the opening. The frame’s warm gold finish and substantial scale complement the restrained palette of the painting beautifully and give the piece a more finished, decorative presence.

Likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, the painting has a small, versatile scale that works well on a bookshelf, displayed on an easel, or hung on a wall.

About the Artist: Charles Joseph Beauverie (1839–1923) was a French landscape painter, engraver, and illustrator associated with the Barbizon tradition. Born in Lyon, he first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon before continuing his training in Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre.

Gleyre’s Paris atelier was one of the most important artistic training grounds of the period and included a remarkable group of students who would later become some of the leading figures of Impressionism, among them Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille. Beauverie studied alongside this circle in the early 1860s, though his own work remained more closely tied to the quieter, moodier traditions of the Barbizon school rather than the brighter palette and looser brushwork of Impressionism.

Beauverie is best known for his atmospheric landscapes—often rivers, lakes, marshes, and wooded scenes—painted in a subdued palette of grays, browns, greens, and muted blue tones. His paintings tend to emphasize weather, light, and atmosphere over detailed topography, giving them a soft, contemplative quality.

His works range widely in value depending on size and subject. Larger oils on canvas often sell in the $1,500–3,000+ range, while smaller signed landscape panels typically sell for approximately $600–900 unframed and $900–1,500 when presented in an ornate period frame.
