Description

A signed oil on canvas depicting the Ländtor and St. Martin's Church in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany. The composition captures the medieval gate with the church's distinctive Brick Gothic steeple rising above the surrounding rooftops.

The Ländtor and St. Martin's Church remain prominent landmarks in Landshut's historic town center today. St. Martin's Church is also home to the tallest brick church tower in the world.

Painted in a palette of terracotta, muted greens, soft blues, and warm neutrals, the work features visible brushwork and textured paint application, particularly throughout the foliage and sky.

Signed lower left and in a giltwood frame.

The reverse retains a stamped stretcher from J. Eisenmann, München 23, Siegfriedstr., a Munich art supplier and framer whose stamp appears on a number of German paintings from the early to mid-20th century, supporting the work's Bavarian provenance.

Sourced in Denver, Colorado, from the estate of Merle Steven McClung (1943–2026), a Harvard graduate, Rhodes Scholar, and lifelong advocate for educational opportunity.

Dimensions: 19 1/2" H × 15 3/8" W

Condition: Good antique condition. Age-related patina to the canvas. Minor wear and separation to the giltwood frame consistent with age.
