Vintage French Countryside Pond Pastel Landscape
Description
A soft and atmospheric French landscape rendered in pastel on board, depicting a reflective pond set within gently rolling fields beneath a pale blue sky. A line of distant trees stretches along the horizon, while the water catches subtle tones of blue, cream, and pale gold.
The work is signed lower right “H. Hugrel” and bears a handwritten label on the reverse reading “Honoré Hugrel No. 078,” suggesting it may possibly be by the French painter Claude Honoré Hugrel (1880–1944). The signature bears a striking resemblance to examples of his known signature, particularly in the distinctive formation of the “H” and the slightly angular “grel.” Combined with the matching subject matter and pastel technique, there is a compelling case for the attribution, even if it cannot be confirmed with complete certainty.
Claude Honoré Hugrel was a French regional painter known for quiet rural landscapes rendered in soft, blended color and an especially atmospheric quality. This piece shares many of those same characteristics.
Beautifully understated, it would work especially well layered into a gallery wall, propped on a shelf, or styled with other landscape paintings and collected objects.
Sourced from France.
