Description

A serene and atmospheric French landscape painted in oil on cardboard and signed Albert Martin, 1939, at the lower right.

The composition looks across softly rolling hills toward distant blue mountains, with two small farmhouses tucked into the foreground beneath a wide sky of pale blush and cream clouds. Painted in luminous, layered tones of sage, dusty blue, lavender, butter yellow, and soft rose, it has a distinctly dreamy and pastoral quality.

The reverse is inscribed “Paysage Chalencon Ardèche,” identifying the scene as a landscape in the Ardèche region of southern France. Like the other works in this group, it appears to depict a remembered countryside, painted with a gentle, nostalgic hand.

I sourced this together with three other paintings by Albert Martin, all depicting southern French landscapes in a similar palette and style.

Its soft colors and peaceful composition make it especially lovely displayed on a shelf, layered into a gallery wall, or styled in a child's room or nursery. The muted palette works beautifully with antiques, pale woods, and collected objects.

Oil on cardboard.

Measures 6 7/8" W x 5 1/8" H.

About the Artist

The reverse lists Albert Martin as an “artiste peintre” and “Officier de l’Instruction Publique,” an official French academic distinction often used by teachers, professors, and artists in the late 19th and early 20th century. This suggests he was likely a respected regional painter or drawing instructor rather than an amateur hobbyist.

The reference to Chalencon in Ardèche, together with the Marseille address found on the other paintings in this group, suggests Martin was based in southern France and painted remembered landscapes from that region. The gentle palette and affectionate tone of these small works give them the feeling of personal keepsakes rather than formal studio paintings.
