Vintage French Village Landscape Oil Painting by Albert Martin

A bright and charming mid-century French village landscape painted in oil on cardboard and signed Albert Martin, 1954, at the lower right.

The composition depicts a hillside village with clustered ochre buildings and terracotta roofs set against rolling green hills and a pale lavender sky. A sweeping pine branch frames the scene at upper right, lending the painting a distinctly southern French feel.

The reverse bears a handwritten inscription identifying the scene as a village in the Ardèche region and noting that it was painted by Albert Martin as “the little village of my youth.”

Painted in soft, sun-washed tones of celadon, lavender, ochre, and terracotta, it has an especially fresh and decorative quality that would work beautifully layered into a gallery wall, displayed on a small shelf or easel, or styled in a child's room or nursery. About the Artist: The reverse lists the titles “Officier d’Académie” and “Officier de l’Instruction Publique,” official French academic distinctions often used by teachers, professors, and artists in the late 19th and early 20th century. They suggest Albert Martin was likely a respected regional painter or drawing instructor rather than an amateur hobbyist.

The Marseille address on the reverse (“Villa Berthe, Auriol-Blanc, Marseille”) and the reference to Ardèche suggest he was based in southern France and painted remembered landscapes from that region. The inscription has the tone of someone recalling a beloved village from childhood, which aligns beautifully with the painting’s warm, nostalgic atmosphere.
