Vintage French Village With Wildflowers Oil Painting by Albert Martin

A bright and charming mid-century French village landscape painted in oil on cardboard and signed Albert Martin at the lower right.

The composition depicts a small village with clustered red-roofed buildings and a church rising above the trees, set beyond a foreground of loose, colorful wildflowers. Painted in soft, sun-washed tones of sky blue, celadon, coral, ochre, and pale pink, it has the warm, hazy quality of the south of France.

The reverse bears a handwritten inscription identifying the scene as a village in the Ardèche region and notes that it was painted by Albert Martin as “the little village of my youth.”

I sourced this together with three other paintings by Albert Martin, all depicting southern French landscapes in a similar palette and hand.

It has an especially fresh and decorative quality that would work beautifully layered into a gallery wall, displayed on a small shelf or easel, or styled in a child's room or nursery. The soft palette and storybook-like village scene give it a charming, collected feel.

About the Artist: The reverse lists the titles “Officier d’Académie” and “Officier de l’Instruction Publique,” official French academic distinctions often used by teachers, professors, and artists in the late 19th and early 20th century. They suggest Albert Martin was likely a respected regional painter or drawing instructor rather than an amateur hobbyist.

The Marseille address on the reverse (“Villa Berthe, Auriol-Blanc, Marseille”) and the reference to Ardèche suggest he was based in southern France and painted remembered landscapes from that region. The inscription has the tone of someone recalling a beloved village from childhood, which aligns beautifully with the painting’s warm, nostalgic atmosphere.
